Self Care Sundays

My husband and I recently returned from a Disney cruise to the Bahamas.  (Yes, we were on the fantastic Disney Dream without the kids, which I highly recommend, but that’s another story.)  The air and sunshine felt fantastic, especially since we were escaping from the winter-like weather in northern Virginia.  One of the highlights was a couples’ cabana massage on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.

We’ve been super busy with our family over the years. This trip gave us a change to refocus on each other, free of anyone else.  The forced disconnect  – unless you want to pay a small fortune – was amazing. As we lounged in the open air cabana, hidden along a leafy trail, our masseuses did the normal intake about exercise, relaxation and so on. When they asked about massage, it struck me how long it had been since I had one. And, I so needed it.  The muscle relief that it provides ought to be prescribed by your doctor. Completely stopping to focus on yourself for several days in area where no one can call or text was bliss. I’m not sure if it was the massage, the beach setting, the fabulous lunch of grilled mahi mahi and fresh fruit that followed, or just being with my love, but I was determined to bring that feeling back home.

Fast forward to a couple of Sundays ago when I found the time to soak in the tub that I seldom use (because I’m usually in a hurry an a shower is faster). It was a bright sunny day but closing the shutters made it bathroom semi-dark. I filled the tub with water at just the right temperature and added lavender and eucalyptus scented Epsom salt (two of my favorite spa-like fragrances and great for muscles), topped it off with bubble bath. Next, I lit assorted candles from Alex and Ani and Volcano’s Capri Blue candle which resulted in wonderful blended note. I’d created my very own “home but not at home” escape…total bliss! Almost an hour later I was a different person. The experience improved my mood for the rest of the day and I had a better mind-set for the work week ahead.

(If you don’t have time for a soak, try spritzing your shower with European Spa Source’s ShowerSpa Mist which is made with eucalyptus oil infused with lavender for a refreshing aromatherapy experience.)

Create your own relaxation moments, using your own favorite products, add a glass of wine and bring that magazine or book that you’ve been meaning to catch up on – but do it! It’s not about having time, it’s making time. And you are worth it!
