A few weeks ago, we pondered how we would shop for makeup during Covid-19. Clearly, trying on makeup is a high-touch activity. It’s also a challenge to match or find a new color online.
I needed a new formula for some work that I’m doing. As a fan of Fenty Beauty, I already knew that I wanted to try their Pro Filter for better coverage. But I had to visit a store to figure out what shade I needed. We’ve been super safe during Covid-19 and I wanted to continue moving with care. I ventured out to Sephora in Reston, VA to see how this would work.

When I arrived there was space for a line outside but few people were in the store, and I was able to walk right in. I was met at the entrance by a friendly associate who explained that the testers were for display only and that a makeup specialist would help me with selections.

By the time I got to the Fenty Beauty display, Becca, another associate approached and was happy to assist. I told her what I was looking for and she recommended three shades of the Pro Filter that might work. As I was trying to figure out how we would test them, Becca pulled out a small piece of clear plastic, similar to the barriers that you now see at most check out registers. She then made small swatches of each shade that we had selected on the plastic, held the plastic up to my face and voila!
It was easy to choose what ultimately, was the best shade for me. I think that one reason is that Fenty Beauty has such a rich range of colors that you’re bound to find a great match. Another reason is that Becca was very knowledgeable about the makeup line, and was able to offer helpful suggestions, which is crucial in this situation!

I also purchased concealer which Fenty Beauty matches to the foundation, making that part super easy. And get this: The entire experience was no touch, and both Becca and I kept our masks on the entire time.
Later that evening…
Once I got home, the real test was to put the makeup on to see how it looked on my skin. First the foundation, then the concealer…OMG, it was everything that I’d hoped for and I’m thrilled! No returns!
But what if it didn’t work? Would they accept a return during Covid?
As of this writing Sephora’s policy states that “Sephora in-store purchases may be returned if the product is in new or gently used condition within 30 days of purchase with a receipt or gift receipt at a store location for a refund in the same form of payment as your purchase was made. If a gift receipt is presented, you will receive a store credit in the form of a Sephora merchandise credit. For approved returns made 31 to 60 days after purchase, we offer store credit in the form of a Sephora merchandise credit.”
So there you have it! You CAN shop safely for makeup. You can even try a new color or formula, but be sure to check the return policy in case your purchase doesn’t work for you.
Your Zoom meetings may continue!
